Description
This is a VP level role reporting to the CTO Group.

MAIN DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE ROLE:
The application architects will work within the application architecture discipline as part of the Enterprise Architecture Group.

The primary focus of the role is the following :
- Provide subject matter expertise around the key application development technologies
- Participate in the production of technical standards, developer guidelines, best practices, etc.
- Partner with R&D to enable adoption of emerging and transformational technologies
- Undertake Technical Architecture/SWAT assignments in support of the SDLC

Responsibilities
- Governance and QA of technical architectures for the architecturally significant projects
- Perform consultancy assignments, including design/code reviews and SWAT assignments, as requested by IT Management.
- Develop blueprints/patterns, in collaboration with Engineering groups, for best practice usage of technologies and products
- Perform technology governance, as mandated by the SDLC, across the architecturally significant projects.
- This governance will include ensuring the standard technologies and blueprints are used where appropriate
- Work with the IT Product Line management teams to drive common approaches and establish synergies across the development organisation
- Assist the wider IT development community with advice and assistance on technical training, staff development and recruitment.
- Evaluate new technology products to be brought into the firm (will attend vendor demos, etc, and provide technical commentary).
- In respect of the above responsibilities, the application architect will be accountable for solutions and standards that support the business requirements and qualities of service as required by the IT Strategy, specifically complying with security, scalability and performance requirements


EDUCATION AND PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor's Degree
A track record of working with industry consortia, publishing in trade/academic journals, etc., is desirable as part of establishing credibility as an authoritative technical architect.

WORK EXPERIENCE/BACKGROUND:
At least 8 years IT industry experience, with a minimum of 4 years experience in investment software development, and a minimum of 2 years consulting experience.

Strong development and consulting skills are essential. The successful candidate will spend the majority of his/her time working on technical architecture engagement with development teams, so a proven track record in consulting is vital. He/she will also need experience of being 'parachuted in' to consulting engagements, as technical SWAT engagements are likely to arise without prior warning, and require rapid engagement and resolution.

The successful candidate will need in-depth experience of using both bleeding edge' and mature technologies, and be able to demonstrate the appropriate decision making processes that adopt the appropriate choice for the business problem. He/she will also need strong problem-solving skills, and have experience in the diagnosis and resolution of complex technical issues including: performance, code size, concurrency, code quality / maintainability, reusability, and portability. Investment Banking experience.

TECHNICAL/BUSINESS SKILLS & KNOWLEDGE:
- Application architects need to be able to deal with any of the myriad technologies in use, so good knowledge of legacy, current, and emerging technologies is essential.

- Practical development experience with one or more of the following development languages: Java, C++, C#;

- Experience in building systems using J2EE application servers or .NET platforms.

- Practical knowledge of operating systems: Windows NT/2000/XP, Linux, Solaris.

- Working knowledge of standard development tools such as Visual Studio .NET or Eclipse.

- Knowledge of enterprise middleware technologies such as JMS, CORBA, MQSeries is a prerequisite.

- Some experience of database design and implementation is also necessary (Oracle experience is required, Sybase would be a plus).

- At least three years practical experience developing web service / SOA applications using J2EE and/or .NET.

- Expertise in XML, XML Schema is required.

- Experience of architecting/implementing object-oriented solutions utilising recognised design and architecture patterns.

- The ability to read and understand UML models.

- Knowledge of financial products, including equities and fixed income products.

- Knowledge of front-to-bank trade flows, position keeping, and settlement process.

- Practical experience of developing architectures and designs using Object-Oriented Modelling methodologies and tools (e.g., UML, Rational Rose) is desirable.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS
The successful candidate will be a self-starter, able to work well without supervision. He/she will be delivery focused and deadline driven.

Good communication skills are essential, both in working with internal clients, and in producing reports and contributing to the technical standards / assets managed by the Enterprise Architecture Group. Ability to network and influence, and to gain consensus when faced with differing views is also very important. Some project management experience would be advantageous.
