Description
An Operational Data Store (ODS) provides the backbone of an Enterprise Application Integration (EAI) layer that allows the storing of common businesses data in consistent manner and format with the AOC. Unlike a more traditional data warehouse, which contains static data, and used primarily to report on historical data, the contents of the ODS are updated through the course of business operations. The Data Architect designs and/or re-engineers the Operational Data Stores (ODS) and possible data warehouses in compliance with AOCi:s Enterprise Architecture (EA) initiatives. The Data Architect working with the Chief Enterprise Architect will analyze requirements and design the required data structures to support the organization's business requirements. Specific task include but are not limited to:

1. Review current operational data structures and recommend optimizations and reconfigurations as warranted
2. Develop, implement and maintain integrated ODS logical and physical data models
3. Develop and maintain an integrated ODS data dictionary
4. Develop and maintain enterprise data standards consistent with EA initiatives
5. Provide full-life cycle (SDLC) support and architectural guidance and ensure quality technical deliverables.
6. Work with end users, managers, knowledge workers, business analysts, technical staff, and project team members to plan, design, develop, implement, and enhance data integrity and metadata for operational data structures and the systems that use them
7. Work with Database Administrators to implement new standards, warehouses, and other data stores.
8. Work with 3rd party vendors to integrate COTS packages.
9. Recommend and evaluate new tools and methodologies. 10. Serve as a data technical strategy expert and lead the creation of technical requirements and design deliverables.
11. Develop schemas for business applications. Requires creativity and strong communication skills, both technical and non-technical.

Also requires excellent problem-solving skills. Works independently and as a member of various technical teams. May provide technical leadership and direct the work of others. Present State of ODS at AOC: In order to provide other AOC applications with ready and timely access to information that is maintained at the NFC, an Operational Data Store (ODS) database and application were developed and reside on a local server within the AOC Computer Center.

The Workforce Planning & Management Application ("WFPM") is a web-based intranet (AOCLink) application used to create data exports of NFC & FMS data for use in Workforce Planning & Management at the Architect of the Capitol. Development began in January 2005 and was accepted by WFPM and placed in to production July 7, 2005. EAFY06 Initiative-7: Data Management and Expansion of the Operational Data Store (ODS) (Enterprise Application Integration Layer)

The challenge for the AOC is to develop a enterprise-wide IT environment that meets the challenges of providing integrated processes, consistent data, accurate and timely reporting, as well as performing these functions on the most efficient infrastructure possible. The AOC enterprise architecture proposes to address these challenges with the following key approaches: In order to allow the various applications to communicate and share data with one another, there will be an underlying technical infrastructure, commonly referred to as the EAI (via the Operational Data Store (ODS)).

The EAI acts as a conduit or hub that reduces the need to have a large number of point-to-point application interfaces, each of which would need to be individually developed and maintained. Since various COTS and custom built systems have their own internal data format, which may be inconsistent with the other applicationsi: data formats, translation rules must be developed for each point-to-point interface.

The result is an increased potential for redundant and inconsistent informatidf-tc
