Summary
As Teach For America grows quickly, the dependence upon accurate and timely data is vital. The database specialist will play a key role in standardizing the organization’s data architecture, developing new technology initiatives and enhancing the existing data architecture in a high growth environment. As a member of a dynamic and highly motivated development team, the database specialist is responsible for creating and maintaining robust, reliable, integrated and efficient databases, scripts and queries in development and production environments. Depending upon the scope of each project, the database specialist will work directly with business owners or through project managers, but always communicate closely with the rest of the development team. The database specialist reports directly to the vice president of technology.

Responsibilities
Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
  • Designing, documenting, developing and maintaining PostgreSQL, SQL Server, and any new databases (potentially Oracle) in support of custom and third party applications
  • Designing, documenting, developing and maintaining data management and reporting scripts
  • Coordinating closely with development staff in a test-driven environment
  • Working directly with users in support of reports and metrics across the organization
  • Recommending and supporting policies and procedures for maintenance of databases
  • Providing guidance for the development, maintenance and performance of scalable systems
  • Supporting both iterative and traditional software development, unit and integration testing
  • Maintaining and verifying the reliability of database backups

Experience/Skills
Education and Experience
  • At least a four-year degree in Computer Science, MIS or a related field
  • A minimum of four years of DBA experience, using (in order of preference) PostgreSQL, SQL Server, Oracle 9i/10g
  • At least four years of database development experience, with similar systems, including tables, views, stored procedures, triggers and indexes
  • A minimum of two years of experience in Database scripting, including Perl, psql or PL/SQL
  • At least two years of experience in database optimization and tuning
  • At least two years of experience working in both Linux and Windows server environments
  • Proven experience in iterative system design, development and implementation
  • Experience working with open source solutions
  • Experience programming in Java a plus
  • Experience working in an agile-like environment a plus
 
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Must have a record of creating and maintaining large, scalable databases supporting both custom built and third party applications
  • Must be detail-oriented, extremely organized and have exceptional writing and communicating skills
  • Operates effectively, and with a sense of possibility, in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment is critical
