USAA is currently seeking a talented Java Software Engineer/System Engineer for our San Antonio, Texas location.

 

As a Java Software Engineer/System Engineer for USAA, you will participate in the evaluation, development and implementation of internal or external business solutions that meet customer needs. Qualified candidate will independently perform moderately complex to complex work assignments and problem resolution across systems, processes, or channels. In addition the Software Engineer I will perform multiple team roles (team member, team co-leader) in the delivery of technical solutions.

 

Job duties:

  • Acquire and apply intermediate knowledge of the business, its applications and processes.
  • Serve as a resource to less experienced team members on escalated issues of a routine nature.
  • Coordinate with cross-functional team members to translate business requirements into specifications.
  • Create test plans.
  • Gather information, analyze data trends, identify root causes, and develop technical solutions.
  • Support and proactively contribute to continuous improvement initiatives within area of expertise for assigned company/staff agency and/or across the enterprise.
  • Within the systems or software development lifecycle, will analyze, design, develop, test, create prototypes, debug and implement new information technology systems or modifications to existing information technology systems.

 

Qualified candidates need to possess:

  • Bachelors degree in IT related field (or equivalent work experience).
  • Four + years of relevant work experience in systems or development life cycle.
  • Familiarity with relevant technical programming languages and/or technical systems.

Preferred experience includes:

  • Mid-Range/Web Developer
  • Two + years of Java development in a J2EE environment.
  • Two + years of web development utilizing JSPs, javascript and XML.
  • One to Three years of work experience with IBM WebSphere server and development environment products (WAS, WSAD).
  • Working knowledge of IBM data connectors, MQSeries, and JDBC.
  • Working knowledge of relational database management system (RDBMS) technologies (e.g. DB2/UDB, Oracle, SQL Server), and UNIX (e.g. AIX, Solaris) environments.
  • Working knowledge of some or all of the following: Perl, Shell Script, C++, Visio, Crystal Reports.
  • Knowledge of insurance business concepts and processes.
