Description
General Summary:

  • Design and develop task-oriented and/or reference information that may be delivered as printed or online documentation, and which may comprise user?s guides, release notes, tutorials, or installation guides for users of architectural or engineering design software.
  • Responsible for managing his/her own individual projects. May take on the role of lead writer on a project, in which he/she may be responsible for coordinating the work of one or more other writers.


Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Does the research required to obtain information for end user documentation. Involves interviewing product specialists, engineers and testers, attending product demos and training sessions, and installing and using the product being documented.
  • Creates an outline for assigned documentation and writes, updates, and verifies assigned user guide chapters, release notes, online help, tutorials, etc.
  • Creates screen shots and illustrations as needed.
  • Manages media required to illustrate written content.
  • Submits work for technical, peer, and editorial reviews, and enters revisions.
  • Participates in team meetings and contributes to the establishment of improved documentation processes.
  • May act as lead writer on a project, which includes participating in project planning, attending project meetings; reviewing written content, and coordinating technical review cycles. In this capacity, the individual may create and maintain a project schedule for the tech pubs team, and manage writer assignments throughout the project cycle.
  • Researches and analyzes users? information requirements, and designs information products to meet those needs.
  • Coaches junior and intermediate writers.
  • Acquires an overall knowledge of the product(s) he/she is responsible for documenting, and an understanding of how they relate to the entire product line.


Requirements:


  • Bachelors degree or equivalent in communication, architecture, or engineering field.
  • 6 or more years of experience in technical writing in a software environment.
  • Strong knowledge of FrameMaker preferred.
  • Excellent writing skills; demonstrated ability in the use of the English language.
  • Capacity to work both independently and in a team.
  • Skill in researching, organizing, and presenting technical information.
  • Ability to adapt to a rapidly changing environment, to meet deadlines, and to work under pressure.
  • Excellent organization and planning skills, proven project management experience.
  • Project lead or team lead experience preferred


Desired Knowledge/Skills:

  • Background in architecture or engineering (building systems or structural) highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of XML and experience working with a content management system a plus.
