Linux Systems AdministratorSan Francisco, CASummaryAs a member of the Linux and Cluster Computing Group for the IT Division, this position will maintain Linux and UNIX computing systems, network services and provide customer support for scientific researchers. This position will also plan, organize, and implement deployment of new technology and services for departmental computing.Specifically, you will: * Provide Linux system administration and user support for LBNL scientific research groups. This includes system installations, upgrades, file system management, system hardware and peripheral management, security configuration, OS and security patches, customization of user group working environment, troubleshooting, network monitoring, and crash recovery. * Assist users with program compilation and use of UNIX tools. * Build third-party and public domain software into Linux RPM packages. * Develop system administration, security, and network policies oriented towards efficient UNIX management. * Develop automated software tools and resources for systems administration on a large scale. * Participate in formulation, planning, implementation, and documentation of projects in the areas of capacity planning, disaster recovery, system security, storage management, and system resource management.Qualifications * Bachelor's or advanced degree in computer science or scientific field and a minimum of 4 years full- time Linux and Unix system administration experience in a large distributed computing environment. * Solid knowledge of UNIX systems administration skills (installation, upgrades, NIS, NFS, automounter, Sendmail, printing, DNS, BIND) and experience with software and hardware RAID devices, volume managers, web/database server configuration, and backup/archive systems. * Experience programming with several of the following languages: (C, Fortran), scripting languages (shell [C shell, Bourne], Perl, TK/TCL), HTML/CGI programming, version control software such as CVS. Must be able to build Linux RPMs. * Knowledge and experience in project management and project control activities. * Experience and knowledge in technical comprehension of current computing and networking, procurement, and software development techniques. * Software development experience and related skills are strongly desired in order to provide expert user assistance with their applications or user environment. * Desired: Work experience providing systems support at a research institution.df-tc
