Description
Role/Purpose:
Assist ISD software development teams in producing high quality global software in preparation for localization to a variety of languages to increase revenue and market share in World Wide markets. Participates with design, development, and localization teams to ensure software can be efficiently localized.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

DESIGN PHASE:

  • Participates in design meetings with core development team to discuss design decisions and to provide feedback on design decision with regards to localization.
  • Analyzes software designs for localization requirements. Ensures designs meet standards that will enable the product to be localized with standard localization tools and processes.
  • Provides input and guidance to Marketing regarding feasibility of creating product for a global market and in requested languages. May provide training to various groups on localization process to ensure developers are aware of localization and globalization impact on the product. Provides input to project forecasts and determines what effect proposed changes may have on outcome (?what-if? analyses). Provides specific scope information (such as word count for Software) to help estimate financial impact.


DEVELOPMENT PHASE:
  • Coordinates all software localization efforts with the core development teams and localization teams. Participates in planning meetings with localization team to discuss design decisions and to provide feedback on schedule and cost of localization.
  • Analyzes software for globalization requirements. Ensures product can be localized with standard localization tools and processes. Works with Localization Engineer(s) to define areas requiring globalization.
  • Uses a variety of globalization tools to check the product source code to ensure it is properly globalized. Where there are deficiencies, works to correct the deficiencies and educate other software engineers with respect to best practices.
  • Ensure that the English product supports local markets by ensuring that it functions on non-English operating systems (i.e. product is ready for worldwide usage). This is a larger list of languages than that in which we localize products (exact set to be clarified by Product Marketing via the MRD).
  • Ensure successful round-tripping of data across different languages and codepages (e.g. German, Japanese, Czech)


LOCALIZATION PHASE:

  • Works closely with other groups such as Testing, Tech Pubs, throughout the development process to ensure high quality products are released in a timely manner.
  • Develops Globalization Plans and status reports for the localization team.
  • Updates the software globalization process documentation and tools to reflect best practices.
  • Creates scripts to automate tasks.
  • Supports internal localization teams by answering technical questions concerning the software functionality.
  • Ensures localizability of the software and ensures translated software can be built back into the product.


TESTING PHASE:
  • Reviews globalization defects identified by the testing team and determines source. Advice and provide solutions to the development team to facilitate Core defect fixes.
  • Investigates identified Globalization defects. Documents and reports globalization bugs on defect tracking system.


PROCESS IMPROVEMENT:
  • Creates and documents software globalization and bug fix procedures as appropriate to the development process.
  • Implements and improves current software globalization procedures and processes within the development team and actively contributes to the globalization of Company products.
  • Works with other software globalization engineers to develop, implement and improve current tools and software globalization processes.
