Unix System Administrator Job Description ' Provide 24x7x System support and Tier-2 Application support for mission critical applications in a production environment. On-call support using pagers for notification/escalation. ' Some responsibilities include but are not limited to the installation, configuration, maintenance, monitoring and performance tuning of Sun Solaris based servers in Production, Testing and Development environments. ' Ability to solve complex system problems efficiently and effectively in a high pressure environment. ' A strong willingness and desire to learn and stretch competencies. Flexibility required in work hours to achieve project deadlines and/or to fix production related problems/issues. ' Ability to schedule and prioritize tasks out of a list of tasks while multi-tasking. Effective time management skills needed to achieve committed project deliverables in a at-times high pressure environment. ' Self-starter with the ability and motivation to learn new technologies quickly and with minimal support and guidance. ' Effective communication skills and the ability to interact professionally with a diverse group of customers, developers, testers, administrators and project team. ' Basic script writing in Unix environment with shell and or Perl. ' Team player who can work effectively in a team. Requirements ' Solid foundation and experience 6-8 years and more working in a Unix environment  preferably Sun Solaris, Veritas volume manager, file system and net backup providing Operations support and Systems Administration in mission critical Production environment. ' Thorough understanding of principles of Unix Operating system - paging and swapping, inter-process communication, devices and what device drivers do, filesystem concepts, security and network administration, performance analysis and tuning. ' Thorough understanding of principles of TCP/IP networking, Unix System and Network Security. ' Basic scripting skills and script troubleshooting in Unix environment using shell and or Perl. Preferred skills in addition to above not a must ' Red Hat Linux ' CISCO PIX Firewalls, Network Switches ' Basic Oracle DBA skills ' Familiarity with various systems tools, utilities used in system and network administration * experience with Sunfire and enterprise platforms
