Description
The Release Engineer is a prominent player who, in addition to broad and advanced technical skills, is expected to demonstrate full ownership of assigned tasks, initiative, and technical leadership. S/he will work with a team of experienced Java developers to manage and support the build release cycle of our client’s flagship software solutions.



Primary duties will include Perforce administration on Linux and manage/development of automation/productivity tools. S/he will also be responsible for delivering product builds, analyzing build results, modifying and optimizing build tools, and contributing to technical documentation. This candidate will also work with Development and QA to provide tools to assist in their efforts.



Exceptional teamwork skills are crucial for this position. This individual will be in constant and extensive communication and collaboration with other groups and team members and will have a key role communicating technical concepts and challenges to other engineers and soliciting input from other development groups and individuals at different locations. Self-management skills are very important. Strong communication skills and an ability to write concise and accurate technical documentation is key. The ability to produce consistent and quality work under time deadlines is highly important.



Key Responsibilities:

Own, establish and drive the entire release activity adhering to the best practices.
Manage branches and merges.
Improve, automate, and make more rigorous the processes and tools used for preparing releases (e.g. Improve build process in terms of portability, simplicity, speed, reliability/repeatability, and robustness/stability).
Advise on configuration management best practices and tune those to the company’s needs.
Collaborate development team in assembling internal & external software releases.
Provide build management support to developers and maintains source code archives.
Work with QA to facilitate verification of releases.
Produce software releases in a timely fashion, ensure completeness and perform rudimentary verification before hand-off to testing.
Manage the build system, build tools, and build process.
Troubleshoot broken builds.
Create the release build deliverables.
Produce release notes & other build related documentation.
Work with Dev/QA to understand requirements for tool programs and deliver in a timely manner.

At least 2 years of hands-on build/release, build automation/configuration management experience in a web-services and/or hosted software development environment.
At least 3 years of overall software development experience.
Strong understanding of configuration management (CM) and build methodology, preferable in Perforce.
Proficiency with mavin and makefiles, build environments, RPM, Java, ANT, scripting languages (preferrably Perl and UNIX shell script) required.
Experience deploying/maintaining freeware tools available on the web, for example: Apache, Jakarta and Mozilla.
Ability to work independently as well as with others. Willingness to aid colleagues in resolving technical issues. Demonstrates proactive, customer-oriented approach when resolving software issues, troubleshooting problems and resolving matters surrounding build processes and tools.
Apache TomCat and WebLogic are a big plus.

Education :

BS or MS in Comp Science or Engineering.

This is a contract position for approx 6 months.df-tc
