Description
GENERAL PURPOSE OF JOB: Provides support to customers and operations departments on technical requirements, including interpreting specifications and meeting functional and reliability requirements for purchased components.



ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES TYPICAL FOR MOST POSITIONS: 1. Functions as liaison with customers regarding technical material requirements.

2. Performs technical reviews of customer approved vendor lists (AVL's) and manages required changes.

3. Recommends optimum component technologies to fit the application.

4. May develop component strategies for usage across work location.

5. May assign commodity codes based on supplier part number and/or parametric part descriptions.

6. Coordinates component-engineering activity for assigned design projects.

7. Identifies potential suppliers, part nomenclatures and commodity codes based on parametric part descriptions.

8. Performs component selection to reduce materials cost, minimize manufacturing concerns, and enhance product robustness.

8. Performs trade-off analysis of components and suppliers.

10. Recommends procurement flexibility options.

11. Assesses potential component life cycle issues.

12. Identifies alternate components/suppliers for reduction of materials cost and replacement of obsolete components.

13. Qualifies new components.



SPECIALIZED JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

Component Engineer

1. Performs failure analysis, or arranges for such work to be subcontracted and compiles the results of failures analysis.

2. Coordinates activities with Incoming Quality Assurance (IQA) to establish programs for qualifications and monitoring of electronic component suppliers and supplier processes.

3. Implements with Incoming Quality Assurance Corrective Action Process for electronic component functional defects found in the manufacturing process.

4. Drives root cause analysis and corrective action for component functional defects.

Education / Experience Typically requires a Bachelor degree in related field or equivalent experience. Typically requires 6 years of experience in test engineering in the high technology electronics industry or related field.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities Demonstrates advanced operations, technical and people and/or process skills as well as customer (external and internal) relationship skills. Demonstrates expert knowledge of the function and a thorough understanding of Solectron and related business. Demonstrates knowledge of multiple functional technologies/processes, industries or functions and understanding of interdependencies of such processes at the site. Use of the following tools may be required: Electronic Assembly: color code, component, schematics. Testing: oscilloscope, cable and harness testing, trouble shooting, component testing, logic analyzer. Inspection: bare board, systems, components, cable and harness, microscope, measuring tools. Mechanical & Electrical Tools: taps and dies, alignment tools, measuring tools. Office skills: telephones, data entry, office software to include, word processing, spreadsheet and presentation package.
