SAN Engineer
Sysgenix Resources is seeking an experienced SAN Engineer with a strong Linux background in collaboration with one of our clients for a contract to hire position. This person must be a highly motivated, self-directed hardware technician to serve in a lead capacity for requisition, assembly and implementation of a custom distributed server/client system from the ground up. This system includes Linux, Windows, OS X operating systems, Blade Servers and two 300+ TB SANs. The work requires the ability to rapidly design, build, test and implement custom hardware for deployment in various geographical locations. This position is deadline driven and will require 24/7 support, overtime and dedication.

POSITION QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

Essential Functions:
  • Setup and/or maintain a large, 300TB+ SAN primary site environment & a similar DR environment.
  • Setup/Maintain Backup/Recovery and disaster recovery solutions in multiple locations.
  • Maintain a LAN and WAN environment with substantial high-bandwidth and 24/7 availability requirements
  • Maintain Suse Linux Servers to provide optimum performance and system availability, including design and setup of monitoring, backup and scheduling
  • Setup and/or maintain numerous critical enterprise services, including: DHCP, DNS, NFS, Samba, SVN, CVS, LDAP, VPN
  • Participate in all phases of the hardware deployment life cycle * requirements analysis, vendor bidding, configuration, testing, and implementation
  • Work with 3rd party vendor on technical design/specifications, development, testing and deployment to ensure the product meets the business requirements and maintenance levels are current
  • Participate in technical logic and design discussions
  • Develop custom hardware including custom components
  • Develop hardware schema
  • Create, maintain, and present technical documentation to varied audiences and levels
  • Provide technical support to development and operations teams and their applications
  • Develop required script/programs for advanced administrative tasks using shell scripting or equivalent
  • Collaborate with the DBA(s) to maintain enterprise-scale Oracle databases
  • Advise on system hardware and software acquisition
  • Train and assist computer area and user personnel when appropriate
  • Environment is very deadline driven
  • 24/7 on call

    Education: Bachelors Degree or higher in Computer Science, or equivalent experience.

    Experience/Skills
    Experience:
  • 4+ year's system administration experience.
  • 3+ years of Linux system administration.

    Skills and Abilities:
  • Experience with the following is required: Blade Servers, Windows, Linux, Unix
  • Solid understanding of Linux operating system: paging & swapping, inter-process communication, devices and device drivers, file system concepts, shells, shell scripting
  • Solid experience in SAN management: Zoning, Host Groups, LUN creation and deployment
  • The SAN environment today is IBM but they are looking to purchase in the next month either DELL or EMC SAN equipment. IBM SAN will then be moved to the DR center.
  • Solid experience in enterprise network services: DHCP, DNS, NFS, Samba, SVN, CVS, LDAP, VPN
  • Solid understanding of Backup/Recovery software: TAR, Backup Exec, Net Backup
  • Solid understanding of network security methods for Linux systems (Experience with Suse Linux distributions is preferred but not required)
  • Experience in performance analysis and tuning of Linux environments
  • Experience architecting and implementing SAN environments
  • Experience with disaster recovery planning and backup system implementation
  • Experience with varied LAN/WAN hardware and technologies
  • Experience with designing and building custom hardware including passive backplanes and expansion cards is a plus
  • Knowledge of various web-application technologies (Apache HTTPD, Apache Tomcat) is preferred but not required
  • Experience with Cisco routers, switches and WAPs preferred but not required
  • Must have ability to travel
