ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Come join our team and see how far we can push Java into smaller and smaller things. We are looking for a software engineer to participate in the development of a leading edge Java ME (Micro Edition) Platform. The Squawk Java Virtual Machine (VM) enables developers to program Java on micro-embedded systems such as wireless sensor nodes and micro controllers. The ideal candidate will thrive on a combination of research, architecture, design, and implementation. This is an opportunity to join a team that is already having an impact on this new and emerging market place. * Contribute to two dynamic open source projects * Project Squawk, a small Java VM written in Java, htttp://squawk.dev.java.net * Project Sun SPOT, a small embedded prototyping platform, http://www.sunspotworld.com * Help port Squawk to new platforms * Extend and Improving tools to facilitate ports of the Squawk VM * Produce release builds * Build and maintain automated build and regression system * Implement kernel services * Produce and present research papers * Work independently with a distributed team * Build and deploy your work into the real world

MARGINAL FUNCTIONS: * Travel

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE: * Embedded software development, such as - Cross compilers - JTAG/ICE debug environments - Emulators - Programming to highly constrained systems * Comfortable with all major operating systems * C, C++, assembler programming experience * Java * Automated builds and regression test harnesses

PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE: * Experience with Java VM and library internals * Real-time programming

YEARS OF EXPERIENCE: 2

MINIMUM LEVEL OF EDUCATION: BS, MS a plus

FIELD OF STUDY: Computer Science, Electrical Engineering
