JOB DESCRIPTION: The Development Database Administrator (DBA) unites a comprehensive knowledge of database technologies with a thorough understanding of application development tools and methodologies. The incumbent combines these technical competencies with an in-depth understanding of business processes in order to assure that database technologies are integrated into application development projects according to industry standard best practices. The incumbent is responsible for assuring that database designs support both business driven data integrity and application functional requirements. The incumbent collaborates with business and data analysts to enhance his or her business process knowledge and to transform logical data models into physical models and databases. The incumbent teams up with application developers to gain a full comprehension of application functional requirements and to ensure application designs and database objects, such as stored procedures, integrate in a manner that fully supports all performance requirements.The Development Database Administrator (DBA) works as an integral part of a project team, developing a Windows/SQL Server-based transactional system. Typical activities include:Using ER/Studio, the incumbent modifies default physical data models created by our enterprise data modeling tools for performance reasons while maintaining synchronization with corresponding logical data models.Review stored procedures, functions and extract, transform and load (ETL) processes.Designing and writing TSQL stored procedures. Restructuring and/or rewriting TSQL code as needed to meet performance requirements.Developing Data Definition Language (DDL) and Data Manipulation Language (DML) in support of development project teams.Designing, configuring, and running volume and stress performance tests of development databases.Sizing and setting recovery requirements for new databases based on metrics provided by the project team.Working with the project teams throughout the development life cycle, moving databases through the various environments (e.g., development, quality assurance, staging and testing).Ensuring database development best practices are followed throughout development efforts.Conducting reviews of database designs and application data access strategies with an eye toward their appropriateness for the related application, infrastructure and enterprise architecture
