POSITION OVERVIEW: ELECTRICAL DESIGNER

Completes highly-technical, difficult, and complex design assignments within the electrical discipline, utilizing either Microstation 2D or 3D CAD methods. Technical skills gained from education/training and experience over many years enable this level of Designer to work independently or cooperatively and complete the most demanding design assignments. Designer must be proficient in Industrial Facility design and very familiar with materials of construction. May serve as Lead Designer on a small project, or major component of a large project.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

Completes complex and difficult designs and layouts for complete systems and components of a project. Assignments typically involve design elements for which there may be no clearly established precedents and require anticipation of problems at the outset in order to provide appropriate solutions.

Performs front-end conceptual layout , developmental and final design of complex systems and equipment applicable to the electrical and allied instrumentation disciplines.

Ensures compliance with required specifications, project procedures, National Electrical Code, standard trade dimensional tolerances, prudent design safety factors, and agreed-upon requirements.

Performs specialized design computations and analysis within the electrical discipline, such as circuit voltage drop, circuit ampacity and grounding conductor sizing. Has experience performing lighting analysis using point-to-point and zonal cavity methods. Performs cable tray, pullbox and wireway allowable fill calculationsWorking knowledge of industry codes, as well as project and company standards will be required

Able to perform interdisciplinary reviews and provide coordination of data to ensure a complete and compatible design.

May provide direction to a team of checking personnel, ensuring the CAD reference file methodology and dimensional accuracy of the drawings produced.

Understands and applies commonly used company design standards and methods. Assists in the establishment or revision of practical design tools and guidelines, as directed.


Collaborates with Engineers and other electrical designers to ensure quality of design.

Reviews supplier data as required. Reads supplier/manufacturer and interdiscipline coordination drawings and 3D CAD files.

Checks orthographic (2D) and isometric (3D) drawings prepared by others. Performs design checking as appropriate to the discipline and as assigned by immediate supervisor.

Assists in training lower-level Designers in basic and intermediate Bentley MicroStation file operations and manipulations. Can assist in training lower-level designers in various basic drawing presentation methods and procedures.

Performs other responsibilities associated with this position as may be appropriate.

PREFERRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

2-year technical degree or certificate of completion from an accredited designer/drafter course (or equivalent) is preferred, as well as 10+ years of relevant experience (including some job leadership experience).

SKILLS/COMPETENCIES:

Requirements include Bentley MicroStation 2-D and 3-D CAD skills, as well as efficiency in utilizing Microsoft Office computer software to organize and complete design assignments.df-tc
