BASIC FUNCTION:

  • Provide technical support for the Information Technology Enterprise LAN/WAN/WLAN and production related networks.
  • Support complex network features and configurations, provide ongoing troubleshooting, recover from network outages and/or qualify performance problems.
  • Manage complex problems and assure service levels are achieved and operational targets are reached.
  • Respond, troubleshoot, replace and repair data communication equipment and cabling as needed to maintain connectivity.
  • Monitor and report on LAN/WAN/WLAN availability, utilization and capacity.
  • Support off-hour network implementation changes and be responsible to execute project plans, document work, and show results.
  • Provide in-depth protocol analysis for problem resolution.
  • Provide 24x7 network support.
  • Two 12-hour shifts on the weekend, plus two 8-hour daytime shifts during the work week.

    Job Responsibilities
  • Administer and troubleshoot the Local Area Network (LAN). Perform configurations, installations and support for various network systems including switches and routers (Cisco & others).
  • Administer and troubleshoot the Wide Area Network (WAN), which includes carrier data circuits (T1, Frame relay, DS3, OC3, dark fiber, DSL, ISDN and ATM) and all related data communications equipment. Work with various Telecommunications providers to resolve circuit issues.
  • Administer and troubleshoot the WiFi Wireless Network (WLAN). Perform configurations, installations and support for the various systems (Cisco Wireless LAN Controllers and Access Points).
  • Analyze and resolve network problems down to the detailed protocol level using existing tools such as Network Instruments Observer/Gigastore, SolarWinds, Adlex, Fluke, AirMagnet, NAM’s, HPOV and Alterpoint. Implement backup and network work around solutions as needed. Deploy, implement and operate network performance tools to assist in the detection and quick resolution of network problems.
  • Monitor network performance and capacity. Report and recommend solutions as needed. Provide ongoing capacity planning information to management and assist in long term planning processes.
  • Assist application groups with performance problems of client server applications. Use monitoring tools to provide application groups with a window into the network component of their application.
  • Work with and train the data center operations staff in the operation of the network, network monitoring and analysis tools, and network problem resolution. Develop a core level of competence with this group to allow for 24x7 problem resolution and network operation.
  • Provide 24 hour support for all areas of responsibility.

    Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor degree in Computer Science, equivalent degree or experience. 5+ years in a network support environment.
  • Demonstrated operations background, proven problem solving skills.
  • Ability to manage complex problems in stressful situations.
  • Strong analytical experience and broad technical knowledge of networking technologies. In depth knowledge and experience with Ethernet, Switched Ethernet, routing protocols (OSPF, BGP, RIP2), wiring & fiber systems, TCP/IP, Cisco & other routers, layer 2/3 switches, probes, protocol analyzers, network management tools (HPOV, ACS, Airwave), frame relay, DSL, ISDN, 802.11abg wireless, SNMP and protocol analysis is required.
  • Experience with cabling and network diagnostic tools and techniques (Fluke cable testers, NI Observer, MRTG, etc.). Extensive hands-on experience with Cisco 3550 /3750 /4500 / 6500 series switches and 3600, 3700 & 3800 series routers with native Cisco IOS 12.x. Cisco 1100 & 1200 Series AP’s. Cisco Certification preferred. Min 2+ years Cisco trouble-shooting experience.
  • Understanding of UNIX OS, Windows and networking capabilities of those systems. Scripting and automation skills using Perl, Tcl, Java, Bourne shell, VBScript is a plus. Knowledge of ATM networks, central office transport equipment and testing methods. Ability to work independently or within a team environment.
  • Needs to be detailed oriented, self motivated individual with excellent written and verbal communication skills required.df-tc
