Description

Job Description:

Senior Engineer

Structural Analyst
This position will perform and document both linear and non-linear structural analyses on both components and assemblies.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:
- Using Pro/ENGINEER, remove unnecessary features from solid models received from design group to produce an efficient model for FEM meshing.
- Using Pro/Engineer, ANSYS, HyperMesh, or other suitable tools, create finite element models, apply loads and constraints, and run solutions. The models will include nonlinear materials and contact elements.
- Based on validated ANSYS results, perform static stress and fatigue analyses and determine margins of safety for all load cases, typically proof test, burst test, and fatigue test.
- The stress fields will typically be tri-axial.
- Frequently the fatigue duty cycle will consist of load cycles of varying amplitudes, so a cumulative damage analysis is required. In this event, the ability to transform a cycle with a specific stress ratio, R, to a cycle with an R consistent with the fatigue data is required.
- If adequate margins are not obtained, recommend design changes to the cognizant project engineer that will provide adequate margins. Revisit analyses to insure the design changes provide adequate margins to all load cases.
- Perform structural dynamics analyses to predict the probability of a products surviving vibration and shock tests.
- Typically the vibration tests will include a random spectrum and/or sine sweeps.
- A modal analysis is required, and the ability to transform random spectrum inputs into equivalent static loads, assuming a single degree of freedom, is necessary.
- Document the results in a technical report suitable for presentation to the external customer.
- Knowledge of ANSYS 7.1 or later highly preferred.
- Must have the ability to preprocess, solve, and post process complex models consisting of several hundreds of thousands of elements and nodes.
- Must be able to perform both linear and non-linear analyses, principally nonlinear materials and/or contact problems, such as bolted joints.
- Proficiency in Pro-Engineer is highly preferred to remove unnecessary features from solid models obtained from design groups.
- Knowledge of fatigue analysis in metals, including the application of modifying factors to account for the effects of surface finish, test temperature, size, reliability, etc., per the the methods presented in Joseph Shigleys Mechanical Engineering Design textbooks, including the methods of transforming a tri-axial stress field into a form that can be compared to the results of uni-axial fatigue tests found in material references.
- Familiarity with MIL-HDBK-5 and Purdue Universitys Aerospace Structural Metals Handbook is desirable.
- MIL-HDBK-5 is the preferred source, with ASMH second.
- Well-developed oral and written communication skills, especially the ability to write clear, concise reports of analytical work using Microsoft Word and Excel.

MINIMUM EDUCATION: BSME or related field, is required.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE:
Three to five years of combined mechanical design and analysis or analyst experience with at least two years of analysis experience using Pro/ENGINEER and ANSYS or equivalent software.
