Functional Description:
The Senior Network Engineer will assist in planning and implementing the City’s overall
strategic goals for the network. They also will carry out network tasks assigned by the
Infrastructure Services Manager and perform scheduled maintenance on the network, monitor
network performance with tools and perform initial trouble shooting, make recommendations for
proactive maintenance. They should possess familiarity with standard concepts, practices, and
procedures within the network operations and infrastructure services field. Relying on problem
solving experience and generally accepted standards they will plan and accomplish goals and
perform a variety of networking tasks and usually works with little supervision.
Technical Responsibilities:

_ Provide on-going support of LAN, MAN and WAN that ensures the clients’ business cycles
will not be impacted during upgrades or maintenance.
_ Perform weekly and monthly network administration tasks to maintain network accessibility
and availability.
_ Perform some network hardware installations, modifications, monitoring, and diagnostics as
well as problem resolution.
_ Assist supervisor with prioritization of work requests, communicating impacts to schedule
and costs when exceptions occur.
_ Provide guidance and training to other staff members about network support.
_ Excellent customer support and interpersonal skills.
_ Follow-up with key clients regularly throughout the issue resolution process to ensure smooth
communication.
_ Provide up-to-date information to clients in response to specific inquiries.
_ Work diligently to meet commitments and deliver assigned tasks by due date.
_ Contact vendors such as Cisco for support and escalation.
Communication:
_ Innovative self-starter with excellent communication skills.

_ Attend operations meetings on a weekly basis including status reports.
Security and Safety:
_ Adhere to all basic safety standards according to client’s requirements.
Personnel:
_ Attend performance-planning sessions with Supervisor on a regular basis to manage work
plans.
_ Work with supervisor to achieve on time formal merit reviews (evaluations).
_ Work with supervisor on education plans that address job performance as well as professional
growth.
Education and Typical Years Experience/Skill-set:
_ At least three years of hands-on network experience with Cisco technologies.
_ Must have a strong working knowledge of Cisco 6500/5500/3500 series switches, 2600/3600
series routers, and familiar with Cisco VPN appliances, firewalls and other security
appliances
_ Must have some hands on experience supporting a Windows environment including
experience with Windows 2000 & 2003 utilizing Active Directory.
_ General knowledge of Network services such as DNS, WINS, DHCP and SMTP
_ UNIX experience is a plus but not required.
_ Experience with network management tools and utilities are a plus.
Certifications:
Cisco Certified Design Professional (CCDP) certification is preferred and Cisco Certified
Network Associate (CCNA) certification is required.
Degree:
Bachelor's degree in related area or three year’s equivalent experience

Expected Development Path
As the organization moves toward enhanced process improvement by tailoring policies,
procedures and standards, the role will evolve and will be augmented with the following:
_ Assist other ACS and City IT Management staff in the development of standard Information
Technology policies.
_ Quantitatively managed the processes so that they are controlled using statistical and other
quantitative techniques.
_ Utilize defined processes, procedures and policies so that they are tailored to the
organizations needs.
_ Continue process improvement to enhance measurements and guidelines to advance the
organization.
_ Verify adherence to defined policies, procedures and processes.
_ Working toward Cisco Certified Design Professional (CCDP) certification.
Other duties as required. May require work after hours and/or on weekends or holidays.
