UC Berkeleys Department of Communication and Network Services - System and Network Security Office has an opening for a Senior Security Analyst.

Responsibilities:
Maintain the campus-wide network intrusion detection systems
-Monitor the incident database for trends and changes in the types and methods of attack
Implement the ability to automate certain tasks and modify source codes to extend the capabilities of the intrusion detection software
Analyze logs of potential security incidents from start to finish and forward appropriate information to departmental contacts
-Monitor incoming security mail for notifications of possible campus involvements in incidents outside of the campus
Scan the campus network for potential security vulnerabilities
-Use network-scanning tools to probe campus computers for known vulnerabilities and alert system administrators of potential problems

Requirements:
In-depth knowledge of security techniques and vulnerabilities
Experience with installing and maintaining complex software such as a network monitoring system
Experience using security tools such as tcpdump, ethereal, and tripwire
Ability to write tools in a high-level language such as Perl and shell scripts
Understanding of security administration in a Microsoft Windows environment
Experience with UNIX and Windows system management, including performance tuning
Ability to solve complex problems in computer and network security in order to assist technical staff, IST units, and campus departments
Ability to administer scanning and intrusion detection systems
Operational experience with both host and network-based security scanning systems
Operational experience with IDS systems
Excellent communication, interpersonal, and collaborative skills to effectively deal with departmental managers, computer support staff, and non-technical staff
Ability to effectively function in a decentralized organization with security related functions distributed across campus departments and within other IST units
Experience with creating signatures for security systems
Understanding of common protocols such as IP, TCP, UDP and ICMP, and how they are used

Requirements:
SANS/GIAC certification
Experience with security packages such as: IntruShield, Snort, Bro, Foundstone, and Nessus
Experience with incident handling procedures
Familiarity with delivering security solutions within a large campus network, preferably in a higher education environment

The salary range for this position is $66,100 - $119,000 per year.
