POSITION SUMMARY

As a Senior Staff Software Engineer you will be extensively involved in the design and implementation of the next generation of Disney.com. Reporting to the manager of the Disney.com team within Disney Online, you will be responsible for the design, architecture and implementation of new systems, features, and enhancements to Disney.com as well as integration with new and existing systems for the Disney.com website properties. You will also be responsible for giving technical guidance and support to QA and documentation teams, lead small to medium size development teams, and support all stages of the software development lifecycle.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Design, develop, and document web software components
  • Provide training, guidance, mentoring and leadership to technical personnel on web technologies.
  • Provide maintenance support and assist with updates to existing web technologies
  • Research third-party technologies for application to internal requirements
  • Interface with external vendors to coordinate integration of technologies
  • Interface with organizations to define requirements and schedules for technologies
  • Provide guidance and enforcement of development processes

    QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field. Master’s degree preferred
  • 10+ years minimum experience in software development
  • 2-4 years minimum experience architecting complex, distributed software systems
  • Seasoned, experienced professional with a full understanding of industry practices & company policies & procedures who resolves a wide range of issues in imaginative and practical ways
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Ability to lead and supervise small to medium size development projects and provide mentorship to less senior members of team
  • Ability to work closely with customers to understand their businesses and accurately capture their requirements
  • Ability to work on multiple, major projects and deliver on time according to project schedules with minimal management oversight
  • Planning software platforms, setting architectural direction and designing high availability solutions for production software
  • Proactively researching and evaluating new technologies with the ability to select best methods and techniques for solving problems
  • Presenting technical issues, solutions and project status to senior and executive management
  • Serving as an escalation point for technical problems

    SPECIFIC SKILLS REQUIRED

  • Extensive experience with Java technologies
  • Extensive experience with Web technologies, XHTML, Javascript, Ajax, XML
  • Extensive experience with 3-tier architecture design and development
  • Extensive experience with Web Services, REST, RSS
  • Extensive experience working with content management systems
  • Extensive experience with SQL, MS SQL Server a plus
  • Experience working with Apache HTTPD, IIS and Tomcat
  • Proficient in standard networking protocols such as HTTP, TCPIP/UDP & Multicast.
  • Experience with system/application debugging
  • Strong leadership, interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills
  • Moral courage to make the right things happen for the individuals, the team and for the company
  • A win-win approach and the ability to work well as part of a broader team
  • Ability to effectively communicate across a broad range of stakeholders, including customers, QA, operations, engineering, management, etc
  • Experience with media, entertainment and internet business models a plus
  • Demonstrated record of achieving results within a dynamic environment
  • Experience with rapid, iterative development and 37signals “Getting Real” methodology
  • Extensive knowledge of the latest internet/web trends and developments
  • A strong appreciation of the Disney brand and the importance of story
