We have an immediate need for a Senior UI/User Experience Designer.
JOB DESCRIPTION:
High level designer responsible for the visual and/or interaction design of web and software applications of moderate complexity and diverse scope. Utilizes knowledge and practical experience and exercises judgment in applying design and usability standards to work and completing assigned tasks in an efficient and timely manner. Has gained progressive recognition as a specialist in one or more fields of interaction design, visual design and/or usability and advises others on design direction and approach. May act as a UI lead on projects of moderate scope.
Works on projects of diverse scope and complexity requiring independent action and decision making. Exercises judgment, applying creativity and ingenuity in the investigation and solution of complex design or development problems. Normally requires no instructions on routine work and only general instructions on new assignments.
Responsible for creating detailed schedules for others when given project assignments from Manager or lead; may lead projects and organize additional resources; responsible for own schedules and work assignments. Coordinates and manages assigned projects to completion, i.e. plans project schedule and resources, provides estimates, records and reports project status and metrics.
- Works with user experience researchers, product management and other stakeholders to understand user needs, business needs, and stakeholder requirements and then designs and documents the interaction and/or visual design of the user experience for both web and software-based interfaces. Gains experience and expertise in one or more fields of interaction design, visual design and/or usability.
- Responsible for integrity of the design of the user experience on significant projects. Plans, organizes, and performs the design and documentation work on an assignment. Coordinates design activity and direction with other designers and programmers on aspects relating to the project.
- Typically responsible for ownership of a project or significant product release.
- Establishes and maintains thorough and accurate documentation of all work. Creates design deliverables such as wireframes, page flow diagrams, and visual design mockups. Generally responsible for directing and/or creating UI specification documentation for a product release or set of features within a release.
- Ensures that design work is consistent with documented design standards. Uses interaction and visual design pattern libraries to maintain consistency in interfaces across products. Contributes to interaction or visual design pattern libraries.
- Keeps abreast of usability and design best practices and developments. Incorporates trends and best practices within assignments as appropriate. Recommends improvements and changes in designs and gives professional appraisal on implementation of the design as planned and/or executed.
- Formally or informally presents design concepts and deliverables to design team and internal stakeholders and gets approval to move projects forward and drive them to completion. Participates in both internal and external design reviews.
- Works with User Experience Researchers to plan and coordinate user testing of product component(s). Participates as an observer in user experience research activities such as usability testing, site visits, focus groups, interviews or other research activities, taking notes and/or contributing to user experience research findings. Contributes recommendations for solutions to identified usability issues.
- Works to support and optimize process improvements in order to become a more efficient and effective team. Identifies and contributes to process improvements that make the group more efficient and effective.
- Prepares status, technical, and management reports as required. May give formal status updates to management and extended project team.
- Creates and occasionally negotiates the schedules for projects of moderate and occasionally more complex scope for product teams and project managers.
- Consults with programmers on technical matters and prototype designs and technical information or modifications related to design, development, and research projects.
- Assists product management defining product, markets and users by occasionally participating in competitive analysis, user research, developing personas.
- Champions user-centered design principles within Engineering and the rest of the company. May serve as the companies user experience representative with customers under management direction.
- Maintains continuous quality improvement in meeting internal and external customer requirements.
- Limited staff management responsibility, but may act in the role of Tech Lead of a project or team.
- Provides usability feedback, design direction and some project management within a project team.
Frequently provides direction and guidance to less senior designers.
Qualifications and Requirements
- BA/BS degree or equivalent in Graphic or Interaction Design, Human Computer Interaction, Human Factors or a related field and a minimum of 5 years of directly related work experience is typically required. 3 years of work experience is required for individuals holding an MA/MS degree in one of these fields. Equivalent experience may be substituted for formal education.
- Must have experience defining information architecture, visual design and/or interaction design for several complex software or web applications and/or significant e-commerce websites. Knowledge of and expertise with three or more of the following software tools for creating design deliverables are required: Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Fireworks, Microsoft Visio, Axure and Microsoft Office. Strong expertise in one or more of these tools is highly desired.

- Experience applying UI design guidelines such as Microsofts Official Guidelines for User Interface Developers and Designers or the Apple Human Interface Guidelines, performing heuristic review and applying usability best practices and principles is strongly desired.
- Familiarity with the respective and combined strengths and weaknesses of Internet, software and web development technologies such as HTML, DHTML, JavaScript, CSS, cookies, browser security settings, Windows platforms etc. in creation and delivery of the user experience is required.
