Description
Looking for an experienced Senior UNIX Systems Administrator to be responsible for the overall operation and support of all UNIX-based systems and system-level applications such as the Oracle DBMS, including hardware and software performance, availability, and repair. The Senior UNIX Systems Administrator faces the challenge of coordinating the efforts of all UNIX Systems Administrators and Oracle Database Administrators to achieve system availability and performance requirements with limited resources in a rapidly changing environment. As new systems and applications are implemented this individual must ensure that the team is adequately trained and staffed.

Specific Responsibilities:

Coordinates and schedules the installation, configuration, and maintenance of UNIX operating systems software, database management systems, applications, application development environments, and utilities
Coordinates and schedules all UNIX server hardware installation, maintenance, problem resolution, failure recovery, performance tuning, configuration, and optimization issues
Establishes and enforces software change management procedures, granting approval for implementation on production servers only when satisfied with the adequacy of pre-production testing and quality control
Maintains interoperability between servers, workstations, and other network devices in a multi-server, multi-operating system environment, including the setup and maintenance of NFS data exchange between UNIX, Windows, SQL Server, Oracle, Exchange Server, etc.
Coordinates and monitors the setup and operation of network printer services using multiple servers, queues, and operating systems
Coordinates the setup and maintenance of UNIX-based Internet e-mail services
Oversees all aspects of UNIX-based system security, with particular focus on sensitive personal and financial data
Coordinates UNIX-related technical support provided to application programmers, telecommunications staff, network administrators, and Help Desk personnel. Ensures that at least one UNIX-trained person is available in the main office at all times during regular business hours.
Coordinates all required services and technical support for UNIX-based portions of the company's Internet and Intranet systems
Coordinates the efforts of all UNIX Systems Administrators in providing second level UNIX-based network software and hardware support to the end user
Analyzes server performance against standards, and evaluates and requisitions new hardware and software as required to maintain performance standards and business needs
Ensures UNIX-based system configuration and operation are thoroughly documented
Continually develops methods to improve end user support (knowledge bases, FAQs, etc.)
Ensures that the status of all IS assets under his/her cognizance is accurately reflected in the asset management database system, and that all repair or modification work performed on these assets is documented within the system
Maintains current technical expertise in the rapidly changing technology, and utilizes state-of-the-art and cost-effective techniques when implementing UNIX-based computing solutions
Prepares monthly status reports (or implements web-based reports) quantitatively reporting UNIX system performance and uptime
Resolves problems with UNIX-based warehouse automation, client-server, and IS hardware and software
Works with IS users within the local company and at remote worldwide locations to resolve UNIX-based system issues
Identifies potential service level problems before they occur and implement solutions
Directs self and the activity of others during the testing, monitoring and installation of UNIX-based hardware and software. Schedule and prioritize work to accommodate IS and customer needs while minimizing impact on current projects

Education & Experience Requirements:
BS or BA degree in computer science or related field preferred or a corresponding number of years experience in a similar or related position
7 years of progressive experience in the management of multi-server, multi-operating system network operations
Expert knowledge level in the HP-UX and/or Sun Solaris operating systems with a sound understanding of the Oracle DBMS platform
Proficient in Windows NT/2000, Ethernet, Fibre Channel, and TCP/IP
2 years of experience in planning and control projects, including performance as a team leader
Ability to understand, and clearly relate to other members of the organization, tedf-
