Senior Unix System Engineer & Manager: 1 position

The Unix Systems Engineering Team is responsible for the engineering effort for the design, implementation, and maintenance of Sun s E25K, E20K, T1000, X2100 servers, any future released Sun servers, and Solaris 10 operating system or higher.

The Unix Systems Engineering Team is responsible for Unix engineering support for the DECC-N environment, to include but not limited to:

  • Includes engineer(s) who possess SUN Solaris Certification and/or relevant work experience with large SUN platforms to perform the integration of UNIX, Oracle, and patching of enterprise level equipment
  • Includes engineer(s) who possesses a solid understanding of networking and SAN principles and an ability to interpret server operational characteristics, accurately determine the presence of a problem, identify possible solutions, selects the most appropriate solution, and implements that solution in a timely manner IAW the Change Management/Request For Change process
  • Applies high skill with commands, utilities and understands advanced aspects in the engineering and administration of Solaris UNIX systems
  • Configures, implements, and maintains SUN Solaris 10 zone configuration in a consolidated work environment and may be required to configure these zones to support older versions of Solaris if technical issues arise that prevents the use of Solaris 10 or higher
  • Understands the interdependencies of products such as Oracle, Microsoft, and other COTS with a SUN backbone and provide engineering solutions for their implementation
  • Engineers solutions for current and future releases of Sun Solaris OS and associated products
Required Skills::
  • Must have a minimum of five to ten years AIX/Linux/Solaris installation and administration.
  • Experience with system and network performance tuning as well as high availability system setup, system architecture and SAN/NAS exposure. Candidate should have a background in networking architecture and troubleshooting and the ability to manage multiple projects and integrate new project requirements effectively.
Tasks:
  • This individual will provide engineering and operations support to the applications and services residing on UNIX based Navy systems running AIX, Solaris and Linux based systems. Individual will be required to work with a team of engineers who are responsible for the following:
  • Perform AIX/Linux/Solaris architecture, administration, automated installation, and performance tuning
  • Participate in NAS NFS and SAN storage administration and tuning
  • Interact closely with developers to improve UNIX architecture and operations
  • Architect and implement fault tolerant and scalable systems
  • Work with other IT engineers to research and implement new technologies
  • Create and maintain system deployment and operational documentation
  • Develop and maintain automated system deployment and configuration management systems for Linux and AIX systems
  • Engineers who possess AIX Certification and/or relevant work experience with IBM AIX platforms to perform the integration of UNIX, Oracle, and patching of enterprise level equipment.
  • Engineer who possesses a solid understanding of networking and SAN principles and an ability to interpret server operational characteristics, accurately determine the presence of a problem, identify possible solutions, selects the most appropriate solution, and implements that solution in a timely manner IAW the Engineering Change Process (ECP).
  • Apply high skill with commands, utilities and understands advanced aspects in the engineering and administration of Solaris UNIX systems.
  • Understands the interdependencies of products such as Oracle, Microsoft, and other COTS with a P570 backbone and provide engineering solutions for their implementation
  • Engineer solutions for current and future releases of AIX OS and associated products
ITIL Specific Functional Roles:
  • Engineering staff can also receive assignments as analysts during the Change Management Process, the Problem Management Process, the Test and Release & Deployment Process. Their assignments and functions are as follows:
  • Change Impact and Assessment Analysis for RFCs
  • Problem Analysis/Root Cause analysis either proactively or reactively to solve incidents and unsatisfactory performance trends
  • Implements changes based on approved RFCs
  • IT environment development, testing, building and deploying release packages to the production environment
Required Education & Certifications:
  • BS Degree or equivalent relevant & direct experience
  • SUN Solaris Certification
  • ITIL v3 Foundations Certification
