Description
Performs as the Platform Technology Set Top Box (STB) Engineer for the design, engineering, development, expansion and continued operation of all digital video systems for the digital television platform. Designs and specifies STB hardware & software. Works closely with STB vendors to insure 1) their products perform according to BEI specifications 2) that enhancements are designed, implemented and tested to BEI requirements, and 3) that problems are identified and resolved in a timely manner. Integrates the STB design into the overall BEI services architecture. Provides tier 3 support for operations personnel. Responsibilities: - Performs as technical expert on all BEI STB hardware and software - Creates requirements and specifications for STBs - Develops software test tools and applications - Manages costs and budgets associated with STBs - Performs testing to ensure compliance with applicable specifications for products and systems - Performs test, selection, and integration of new products - Performs systems integration and debugging activities to ensure that the STB works with the rest of the platform components to deliver a quality service - Oversees technical installations and turn up acceptance testing of STBs in site deployments - Designs acceptance test plans for use by BEI and vendors in unit testing all equipment - Performs systems integration and field deployment activities - Develops monitoring and surveillance tools for STBs and their applications - Develops improvements in STB designs - Evaluates designs for performance, MTBF, power sensitivity (brown outs, etc.), static discharge susceptibility, etc. - Assists in vendor management at deployment sites - Participates in future development efforts - Develops operations methods, procedures and training for STBs - Provides tier 3 support - Travel required to headend and vendor locations

Qualifications
Education Requirements - AS, BS, MS or Ph.D. degree with experience as follows: - Associates Degree - Progression from MTS level [internal candidates only] - Bachelor's Degree - 5 years with significant technical experience in project implementation, or - Masters Degree - 3 years with significant technical experience in project implementation, or - Ph.D. Degree - 1 year with technical experience through thesis work or project implementation Required Skills - BSEE, BSMIS or engineering degree with equivalent experience - 10 years in the design and use of embedded systems - 5 years in the design and implementation STBs - Expertise in network management, communication protocols, digital video protocols, test equipment selection and application - Experience selecting and managing vendors Desired Skills - Experience with Linux, VxWorks, PowerTV, Microware and other STB Operating Systems - Windows workstation and server experience - CTE & DVB tables, ATM and IP networking experience - Experience with IGMP, MFRTP, RTSP and SIP protocols - Expertise in MPEG and WM9, AC3, analog video and audio, and digital video and audio, VBI closed-captioning and extended data services. - Systems integrationdf-tc
