Description
This position requires a computer professional experienced in managing distributed systems, using sophisticated systems management tools, and developing enhancements and additions to distributed systems. The incumbent assists UW Computing & Communications in developing and supporting a state-of-the-art network computing environment for the University.

The incumbent identifies needs, then designs and develops solutions for advanced distributed systems. In some cases, this involves development of UW-specific software; in all cases, it requires evaluation, adaptation, integration, and management of sophisticated system and application software to support the research, teaching, and administrative computing requirements of UW units. Providing consultation to users and system managers is another essential function. Because UW has chosen to adapt leading-edge technology for even its production computing systems, the results of each project must be carefully evaluated, and lessons learned must be applied to subsequent efforts. In some cases this position may participate in joint study projects with computer system vendors aimed at developing improved computing solutions.

Experience/Skills
Requirements: Required - Minimum Education

Bachelors degree or equivalent experience in computer science or related field

Required - Minimum Work Experience

Four years of experience implementing and supporting distributed computing systems.

Additional Minimums

Extensive and expert experience with Windows server and infrastructure technologies.
Extensive and expert experience with security, troubleshooting, performance monitoring, and systems administration.
Requires excellent customer service skills and experience.
Knowledge of Visual Basic, C++, C# or other high-level programming language.
Experience with workstation hardware and software and TCP/IP networking.
Excellent written and oral communication skills and demonstrated ability to work with minimal supervision, both independently and as part of a team.
