Software Test Engineer

Typically requires MSEE/CS combined with 3-4 years of related experience, or BSEE/CS combined with 4-7+ yrs related experience. REQUIRED: Knowledge of TCP/IP or other networking knowledge. Knowledge of UNIX and C programming, and scripting tools such as TCL/TK. Familiarity with network sniffers and traffic generators such as PAGENT, IXIA, Adtech, Netcom. Good writing, speaking, and organizing skills. Self motivated, and able to participate as both a team member and team leader. Some project management or leadership experience; proven track record as a senior network professional.



PREFERRED: Knowledge of TCP/IP, IGRP, EIGRP, IPX (Novell), AppleTalk, DecNet, ATM, VLAN, Frame Relay, SMDS, X25 protocols. Knowledge of Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, ISDN, T1, T3, Token Ring, HSSI, ATM, & FDDI media, and switch architectures. Knowledge of measuring and tuning WAN/LAN performance and LAN switching. Familiarity with Cisco routers and switches; POS or SONET test technology and equipment; RISC processor architecture, such as MIPS R7K. 1+ years Software Development experience. Completion in ICND, BCMSN, and ACRC is required.



Test software and firmware for various interfaces on various multiprotocol router and switch platforms in internet and intranet environments. Develop test programs, scripts, topologies, & tools; test & debug networking protocols that include IPX, TCP/IP, IGRP, EIGRP, Appletalk, and more. Install and configure routers in the test area, and set up experiments on lab routers and networks to troubleshoot, isolate, and identify design and field return defects; document and report all defects found. Write test plans and schedules, document results, and make them generally available; attend project meetings, provide status, identify issues, and complete action items. Communicate in writing and orally with peers, management, and customers to solve platform, network, or other problems. Help train new test engineers and provide coverage to other areas when people are temporarily away from the office. Sometimes lead small teams. Continuously learn about new equipment, software, and testing methodologies being used in the organization and the industry, and innovatively apply the knowledge to increase testing efficiency. Assist with capacity planning and equipment budgeting.



Requires a BSEE/CS or equivalent and relevant work experience. MSEE/CS is preferred. Must have experience in two or more of the following areas: test engineering : test planning, test case design, test automation data networking: remote access, PPP, IP, IPX, TCP, OSPF, L2F, RIP, EIGRP, ISDN, T1/E1, network test tools: Sniffer, Abacus, Firebird, Hammer & Ameritech call simulators, etc. Must have experience in two or more of the following telephony areas: PBXs, central office switches, protocols, analog/digital interfaces, H.323, xGCP, SS7, AIN, ISDN, QSIG, CAS, CCS, etc., Must have experience in two or more of the following software programming expertise: C, C++, Tcl/Expect, Perl, UNIX shell scripts, and/or other scripting languages. Must be familiar with UNIX and Windows (95/NT) O/S's. Completion in ICND, BCMSN, and ACRC is required. -Good personal time management and project management skills are necessary. Must have good people communication skills.



Participate (may take on a lead role) on a project team of test engineers involved in testing hardware/software for Cisco MultiService products. Review Product Requirements Document, SW Functional and Design Specifications, and other relevant documentation to extract test requirements and provide design for testability input. Develop and execute a test plan, this includes test case design, test topology design, test tools and scripts development, equipment acquisition, task scheduling, test execution, problem analysis, reporting, and documentation. Advise management on the overall test and quality status of the assigned project. Increase test efficiency through automation and application of appropriate test technology, tools, and innovation. Help the test department to expand test technology and networking knowledge by keeping abreast with the latest developments.
