Sr. Systems Engineer

Responsibilities
The Senior Systems Engineer is responsible for the planning, design, implementation and support (3rd level) of the enterprise systems, hardware, and software (operating systems, communications, and middleware) within the Data Center .

On a project/assignment basis

  1. Assist with detailed planning and engineering of technical solutions that provide availability, reliability, stability, manageability, scalability and security that can be fully supported as an ASP or by our customers.
  2. Monitor daily system and application performance and availability in order to identify, recommend and implement modifications and tune system performance to improve reliability, and reduce costs to the data center and ultimately its customers.
  3. Provide subject matter expertise with regards to communications protocols and software, and diagnose, report, and develop interim and long-term corrections to the communications infrastructure and software as necessary to ensure a stable platform for the delivery of our services (ie analyze dumps and fix code).
  4. Provide subject matter expertise with regards to Middleware and messaging software, and diagnose, report, and develop interim and long-term corrections to the Middleware infrastructure and software stack as necessary to ensure a stable platform for the delivery of our services (ie analyze dumps and fix code).
  5. Provide monthly reporting of key performance indicators detailing the quantity and quality of service delivered from the enterprise systems platforms to internal Data Centre customers.
  6. Work with 3 rd Party vendors and suppliers in delivering against work packages.
Education and training
A level of knowledge equivalent to that ordinarily acquired through completion of a Bachelor s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field. Master s degree preferred. High School diploma or GED required.

Knowledge and skills

  • Strong knowledge Tuxedo and MQ configuration, programming, and messaging constructs.
  • Fluency in Java, C and/or C , and knowledge of one other high level programming language. Unisys MASM knowledge and experience a plus.
  • Intimate knowledge of Legacy and IP based communications protocols.
  • PC literacy, including Windows and MS Office product suite. Strong skills in MS Excel and Visio.
  • Knowledge and experience with various monitoring tools such as Wireshark, SNOOP, and TCPDump.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret the most complex documents; ability to respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints; ability to write speeches and articles using original or innovative technique or style
  • Ability to make effective and persuasive speeches and presentations on controversial or complex topics to top management, user groups, and/or boards of directors
  • Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems; ability to deal with nonverbal symbolism in its most difficult phases; ability to deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables.
Experience
  • Ten or more years experience providing architecting, engineering, and/or communications and Middleware infrastructure and programming support.
  • Previous experience in Data Centre Operational/Engineering and/or systems administrator roles would be of great benefit.
