Staff Software Engineer - ESPN Fantasy Engineering


POSITION SUMMARY
Position will be part of ESPN Digital Media’s fantasy engineering group in Seattle, Washington. This group is responsible for development and support of all fantasy games for ESPN Digital Media. This position works closely with software engineers, and technical producers to design, develop, test and implement new web-based fantasy sports applications, and to develop new features and functionality in existing games. The position serves as a member of the fantasy engineering team specifically supporting the database development efforts of other team members as well as the creation of new game databases, report generation, maintenance of existing databases and nightly load administration. As a subject matter resource to the group, the position includes ensuring SQL code written by other engineers is optimized and common mistakes or best practices are relayed to the group. This position requires a strong understanding of the entire system based on the work of other producers and engineers within the group. Work includes: identification and correction of non-optimal stored procedures, understanding of work flow for all aspects of all fantasy game seasons, creation of databases to support new game and partner initiatives and to extract data from current games such as league activity, transactions and overall usage.

    QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field and/or 7+ years practical SQL database development experience.
  • Strong understanding of relational database architecture, design, and development practices a must.
  • In depth understanding of online fantasy sports and the data generated and associated with leagues.
  • Understanding of multi-tier web architectures, and OO design patterns and concepts a plus. Candidates must be self starters and adhere to defined product timelines.
  • Must demonstrate solid organization/communication skills and abilities to manage multiple projects within a short development cycle
  • Has proven ability to lead key projects and carry out assignments that have not been done before.
  • Has demonstrated a well organized approach to database development and troubleshooting.

    SPECIFIC SKILLS REQUIRED
  • Ideal candidates should have a thorough knowledge of T-SQL and Microsoft SQL Server(both MS SQL 2000 and MS SQL 2005), including stored procedures, index strategies, performance tuning and optimization.
  • Comparable experience with Oracle, PL/SQL, and/or other SQL considered.
  • Experience with Microstrategy, Netezza, Data Stage, MCP, MCSD or specific Microsoft SQL Server certification a strong plus.
  • Experience with Java, UML, Flash, HTTP, XML, SOAP and Web Services a plus.
