SUMMARY Serve as a senior UNIX System Administrator supporting scientific computing needs in the UNIX environment. Responsibilities will include designing and implementing complex secure and open local and wide-area networks with connectivity to a variety of systems, performing system and network administration for UNIX workstations (SUN, Silicon Graphics, Linux, Hewlett Packard, and COMPAQ Tru64 systems) in a large heterogeneous networked computing environment, and installing and upgrading operating systems and vendor software packages. Applicants should be familiar with security and network monitoring tools, such as firewall (iptables), SAINT, TARA, nessus, nmap and ethereal. Duties also include keeping records on system and network configuration; performing periodic system backups, assisting users by answering technical questions and taking corrective actions; researching new hardware and software methodologies and being cognizant of emerging technologies and trends in networking; developing design heuristics for networking hardware and software configurations; and evaluating networks of potential customers. As contributing member of a team; helping refine team objectives; working with team in scheduling commitments and resources; providing leadership and helping mentor other team members. Requirements:

REQUIRED SKILLS Demonstrated solid understanding of at least two different UNIX-based operating systems including both System V and BSD systems. Experience managing a large (>100) network of systems including specific experience in each of the following areas; automating system administration tasks, setting up a backup system, including a disaster recovery plan, Migrating Oses on a large scale. Must have demonstrated solid understanding of networking/distributed computing environment concepts and tools including network and host-based security software and basic knowledge of intrusion detection concepts. Demonstrated innovative problem solving in a desktop/network environment. On-the-job experience programming or scripting in a higher language. Effective written and oral communication skills, including demonstrated experience making presentations to customers, clients, and professional peers. Demonstrated experience working with all levels of management and co-workers as an individual and in a team environment. DESIRED SKILLS Experience with advanced high speed networking topologies and advanced network file synchronization tools, diskless file systems, and administration of dial-up networking systems and call tracking systems. Experience in a production computing facility with a high up-time requirement, supercomputers and/or charge-back accounting practices. Experience managing and integrating Window NT, Macintosh, and UNIX computers in a heterogeneous environment including knowledge of X-Windows emulation products. Publications on the topic of system administration, programming or other technical field. Ability to obtain a DOE Q clearance. EDUCATION Bachelor's degree in and ABET (Accreditation Board For Engineering & Technology) - certified (or equivalent) Computer Science program or other relevant technical science field, with three years of relevant experience in the computer support field.
