Description

One of the largest IT companies in the world has an opening for a UNIX system administrator in our UNIX Technical Support group. The selected individual will become part of a team supporting several medium to large UNIX servers (up to 1.5 TB, 24 processors in SMP architecture, 12 processors in a NUMA architecture).

Duties include working with the support team in Tucker to provide technical support assistance for Web applications, OLTP and DSS applications on several large IBM CC-NUMA and SMP based computers (manufactured originally by Sequent Computer Systems Inc. but now owned and supported by IBM), a Sun E6000 (24 processors) and several other smaller systems including Compaq based Linux and Sun workstations. The larger systems are Unix 5R4 based computers.

Team members in this position rotate primary responsibilities periodically (backups, volume management, etc.). The selected candidate will have the opportunity to work with technical programming, Veritas volume management, Fibre, large centralized storage devices (Hitachi 7700e), DLT based robotic tape systems (STK9710), FDDI, Gigabit Ethernet, Samba, system tuning, etc.

Requirements: 5 plus years of Unix and 3 -5 plus years as a system administrator in a commercial environment. An applicable four year degree or proven equivalent experience is required. Some travel may be required (less than 10% mostly for training). Familiarity with OS installations and upgrades, backups, security administration and communications is required.

This position requires 40 regular working hours per week (generally 8 to 5 though we have some flexibility) and also additional hours as needed for 24 by 7 on call support (currently 1 week out of 3) and some overtime as required by projects and system failures. The details of working hours and on call support can be discussed in detail during the interview process.

Excellent verbal and written communications skills are required.

Pluses: Knowledge of advanced programming techniques in C/C++, Perl, or Korn and knowledge of technical programming are pluses. Familiarity with database administration and volume managers are a plus. Familiarity with web security and DMZs is a plus.

The Unix team works closely with the NT Administration team (Samba support, Thin Client support, etc) and the Oracle DBA team. These three teams along with the Field Server group constitute the Server Administration group (about 15 persons total). Our group works closely with Desktop Support, IT Operations, IT Scheduling, Help Desk, User Support, Network Engineering, and IS Applications (Financial Systems, EDI, Warehouse Management, Leasing Systems, Export Systems, Customer Management Systems, Data Warehousing, E-Commerce, Unisys Mainframe Applications). This is a very visible position you will be communicating with virtually every work group in the company.
