Description
GTA has a challenging and exciting opportunity for a Unit Director of Network Engineering in our Solutions Development Office.

This position is an opportunity to work with cutting-edge technology building statewide enterprise solutions for an extensive data center network, backbone, and WAN.

Solutions Development creates and supports innovative, cost-effective and competitive IT solutions and services that meet the needs of GTA customers. This office is part of GTAs Operations Division, which provides IT products and services to Georgia state government agencies.

This position manages the unit that is responsible for:

  • Executing solutions development projects and creating and adhering to enterprise architecture standards for the data center network, state backbone, and WAN

  • Implementing processes for the enterprise network

  • Providing Tier-3 support to production network operations


  • Major responsibilities:


    • Managing the units budget and human resources.

    • Coordinating human resources development for the unit, setting performance objectives, providing career development planning, and training and educating employees

    • Helping develop standards and recommending changes to systems, applications and business services.
    • Providing technical and business expertise to Operations Division staff.

    • Keeping team motivated through timely communications.

    • Building relationships, communicating unit goals and objectives to internal and external customers, and soliciting feedback.

    • Working with agency and GTA senior staff to understand their business needs.

    • Reviewing and monitoring unit performance by identifying ways to improve efficiency and effectiveness.

    • Providing input to the business plan.

    • Making hiring recommendations and managing performance of staff, to include responsibility for planning, coaching, evaluating, and developing performance of staff.

    • Providing guidance to other managers on the appropriate use of discipline.

    • Developing and implementing technologies and business services to improve the performance of a business process.

    • Implementing unit goals and objectives to ensure compliance with state policy and legislation.

    Preferred Qualifications:


  • At least six years experience with IP networking


  • At least three years experience in a network environment with at least 50 locations


  • At least three years experience in a previous technical role supporting an enterprise network (while this is not a hands-on role, the manager needs to have had hands-on experience)


  • At least three years experience in a lead role with at least six subordinates or team members


  • At least three years experience using PMI methodologies


  • PMP certification


  • At least three years experience working with ITIL and ITIL-like processes such as change control, production acceptance, etc.


  • Experience with an application service provider


  • An understanding of N-tier applications/architecture


  • Experience with structured cable plants, SONET, IP load balancers, IOS, router virtualization, MPLS, VoIP, PIX firewalls, etc.

  • Six years of professional/managerial experience in a large-scale IT shared services environment.
  • Bachelors degree from an accredited four-year college or university or the equivalent in IT work experience.
  • Three years experience in a lead role.
