Unix Systems Administrator 3Location: Walnut creek, CADescription:The DOE Joint Genome Institute (DOE JGI) has an exciting Systems Administrator position available. Under broad supervision, will work in a diverse and challenging computing environment supporting genomic and genomics related equipment and processes at our large and expanding facility in Walnut Creek, CA. Will work as a team member to provide systems administration support for Sun and Linux workstations and servers and Network Appliance file servers; plan and coordinate the installation, testing, maintenance, and troubleshooting of software and hardware systems. In addition, will provide support for a wide array of equipment including, Layer 2/3 network devices, workstations and servers. Support a large installed linux base including multi-node clusters and large memory systems. Provide support for multi-terabyte high performance storage systems. Develop, refresh, and support management strategies for cluster schedulers, Oracle and MySQL. Will work closely with software developers to develop infrastructure and support strategies for a growing number of new sequencing technologies. Position will report to the Systems Administration Group Lead.Specific Job DutiesEssential -- Provide systems administrative support for Sun and Linux workstations and services and Network Appliance and ZFS file servers.- Support software developers, scientists, and end users; provide consultation to developers in the design and implementation of the logical and physical operation of databases.- Administer Unix infrastructure including hardware, operating systems, and software.- Implement volume management software.- Perform security audits, ensure that systems comply with site computer security policy, and provide input to the security policy.- Provide OS, hardware and scheduler support for multi-node Linux cluster.- Develop and implement scripts to assist in the administration of daily tasks.- Provide low level DBA service for Oracle and MySQL databases.- Establish and maintain database backup infrastructure.- Plan and implement projects including enterprise backups, data management, high availability, server and client standards, and clustering.- Work on diverse and challenging problems, exercise independent judgment and select appropriate solutions.- Work closely with other JGI Informatics teams, and other Systems Administration team members.Marginal -- Troubleshoot hardware and software issues including databases and corresponding applications.- Maintain softwarefarm.Maintainweb, cvs, ftp, nfs and ldap servers.Key Success FactorsEssential -- BS Degree in Computer Science or related field or equivalent experience and a minimum of 5 years related experience.- Demonstrated experience with Sun hardware and technologies including Sun Fire V1280, V880, 480R, X4600, and X4500 systems, ZFS, Dynamic Reconfiguration, and Domaining.- Broad experience with shell programming in Perl, sh, csh.- Experience supporting bioinformatics applications.- Experience with fiber channel hardware including host bus adapters, disk arrays, and SAN.- Experience writing sqlplus scripts.- Broad experience with development tools including gcc and Sun Workshop Pro.- Experience with configuring linux in a clustered environment.- Experience with configuring volume managers including LVM, Sun Disksuite and Veritas Volume Manager.- Extensive understanding of Solaris/Unix internals.- Demonstrated experience with software including OpenSSH, Apache, MySQL, Oracle, Sun Grid Engine, Perl, bash, tcsh, csh, sh, awk/sed, vsftpd, Sendmail, OpenWindows, CDE, Gnome, Samba, rcs/cvs.- Understanding of protocols including TCP/IP, UDP, NFS, NIS, LDAP, CIFS, ssh, ftp, tftp, bootp, http, rarp, dhcp, rpc, pop, imap, smtp, and snmp, scsi.- Strong experience with operating systems including Sun Solaris, Debian, RedHat, OpenBSD, FreeBSD, and DataOntap.- Broad experience with Network Appliance Filers.Marginal -Certifications and Education: Engineering/Computer Science Degree, Oracle 10g Certified Professional, Sun Certified System Administrator for Solaris 9, Sun Certified Network Administrator for Solaris 9, Cisco Certified Professional: Cisco Certified Network Associatedf-tc
