Description
Our client, a leading provider of Network Services for local and international enterprises and carriers, is seeking a VP of Engineering to manage the growth and optimization of its IP, Long Haul, Metro Ethernet, and VPN services. This position will be located in the Metropolitan New York City region, and will manage 70-75 management and staff people in several US offices.

This position will have responsibilities for the management of several Group Engineering Directors and their staffs, including the following functions:
IP engineering, Optical Engineering, Solutions Engineering, Network Capacity Planning and Fiber Engineering.

Scope of Role
The Vice President of Engineering is responsible for providing oversight to a team of engineering and technical professionals responsible for the design, planning, architecture, and support of the firm's optical, IP and fiber network infrastructure. The Vice President is responsible for ensuring that the network is architected to deliver highly scalable, leading-edge services in the most cost-efficient manner possible. This executive is responsible for an operating budget. In this role, the VP will develop the Engineering portion of the business plan and participate in the development of the company's long-term strategic plan

Responsibilities

- Develop and manage an engineering organization that is proficient in designing sophisticated broadband telecommunications services, including but not limited to, IP, Long Haul, Metro Ethernet, and VPN services, as well as managed optical networks.

- Plan and architect a highly scalable network infrastructure to enable the delivery of the firm's entire suite of telecommunications services. Develop and administer a disciplined capacity management program to ensure all revenue generating orders can be accommodated in a timely fashion.

- Provide engineering support to the product development organization. Assist product development managers regarding the development of technical service descriptions, architecture recommendations, and market introduction.

- Continually evaluate new technologies for potential integration into the firm's service offerings to introduce operating efficiency, generate additional market differentiators and additional sources of revenue.

- Negotiate with vendors to ensure that new technologies and services added to the network are cost-effective, and comply with the firm's standards for operational reliability.

- Develop and manage to operating and capital budgets and forecasts.

- Clearly communicate across various departments to ensure deliverables are understood, projects prioritized and deadlines met

- Support sales and technical proposals, presentations, and reports to customers.

- Design and implement processes that provide for a high level of internal customer satisfaction. Continually investigates opportunities to streamline design functions to reduce intervals and improve the quality of each order.

- Evaluate and implement improved Engineering performance, management, and tracking methods to monitor and control costs that will allow the company to complete projects on time and under budget

- Recruit, develop, manage, and motivate highly trained technical professionals (engineers, project managers, et al.) to ensure an effective work force.

- Evaluate, organize, and staff the Engineering organization with strong managerial talent.

- Ensure that employees are trained and equipped with the tools to perform their jobs successfully.
Education, Experience and Skills Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering or technical field required.
Advanced degree in Computer Science, Engineering or technical field preferred


- A strong leader who can motivate the departments managers and staff and will hold engineers accountable for meeting business goals.

- Strong experience in the management of projects, people, vendors, budgets, customer relations and other outside resources.

- Thorough understanding of telecommunications concepts and technologies including IP, Ethernet, CWDM, DWDM, optical fiber, power, HVAC and other environmental systems.

- Knowledge of optical networking, multi-layer switching (MPLS) and IP routing.

- Advanced understanding of the technical components relating to fiber optic networks.

- Experience in the analysis of network performance metrics

- Knowledge in network capacity management and measurement

- Experience in short and long term technology planning

- Experience in technology evaluation, testing, and selection.

- Experienced managing an engineering organization in a telecom or network service provider environment and has a demonstrated history of completing projects on time and under budget.

- Ability to establish and document clearly defined goals and objectives. Ensures compliance with measured performance.

- Ability to delegate effectively and ensure accountability for assigned tasks.

- Proven ability to collect, analyze, and understand data used to measure performance of the organization.

- Proven ability to plan, lead, organize, and control in a dynamic work environment.

- Strong vendor negotiation skills.

- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

- Good presentation skills.

- Project management skills.

- Minimum of fifteen years of telecom experience particularly fiber optics and IP networks is preferred, prior management experience required.df-tc
